The drawings of Miguel II: Save Yourself, Wake up Bull”

2017

Travesía Samaritana, corner of Calle Oriolet 17

Designed from two of the drawings by Miguel Hernández, in the margin of his manuscript of his poem “Elegía media del Toro” of 1933. This collective mural shows two bullfighting scenes that perfectly define the struggle in the arena between bull and bullfighter. The supreme instant of the chance to kill, and the bullfighter on his knees. The authors oppose the intensity of the moments represented through slender figures drawn with simple lines,  with patches of lively colours. These two scenarios define the beautiful bullfighting metaphor that the poet uses to appeal to the dignity and freedom of the human being in the poem “Llamo al Toro de España”

Wake up, bull: brandish, unleash, vibrate.
Rise up, bull: bolt off, bull, rush forward.
Turn to whirlwind, bull: roll over.
Save yourself, Spain’s dense bull of emotion.
Save yourself.
