“Mis abarcas vacías” (My Empty Shepherd Shoes)

Matilde Pons, painter and drawing teacher at Tháder secondary high school, designed and coordinated this mural with the help of the school’s students. The painting portrays the evening of January 5^th 1934, a central date of Miguel Hernández’s “Las abarcas desiertas” poem. The Magi never left any presents inside his shoes.

Por el cinco de enero,
para el seis, yo quería
que fuera el mundo entero
una juguetería.

Y al andar la alborada
removiendo las huertas,
mis abarcas sin nada,
mis abarcas desiertas.

Ningún rey coronado
tuvo pie, tuvo gana
para ver el calzado
de mi pobre ventana.
